The Vest I Can't
Stop Thinking About

There is a vest in my cart, and I visit it the way some people check on a plant. Morning coffee, quick look. Still there. Still perfect. After the dress that swept me off my rules, I promised myself I'd browse the rest of Laganini Studio calmly, like an adult. That lasted about four minutes.

The object of the obsession: a tailored vest with a mandarin collar, cut with a flared waist so it holds its shape instead of hanging there, striped in white, brown, and blue, and finished with authentic cheongsam buttons — the whole thing a wink at 1950s Shanghai tailoring. It's structure and softness at once, and it solves a problem I have every single summer.

Structure, without the sleeves

Here's the case for a truly tailored vest: it's the blazer's job, done in heat. We've written about building a wardrobe around one great jacket — the piece that adds intention to everything under it. From June to September, that jacket lives on a hook. A tailored vest picks up the contract: over a silk skirt it reads polished, over wide trousers it reads deliberate, and worn alone with gold at the ears it's an outfit finished before you've thought about it. Sleeveless structure is the rarest thing on a summer rail, which is exactly why the good ones disappear.

In praise of the considered cart

And yet — it's still in the cart. On purpose. Because the pause before a purchase is where good wardrobes are made, and there's a test I run while a piece waits there:

• Name three outfits before you buy. Not imaginary ones — three real combinations from the closet you own today. My vest passed embarrassingly fast.
• Check the fabric, not just the photo. This one is 100% certified organic cotton, which is why it will breathe through an August afternoon that would defeat a blazer.
• Would you pre-order it? Waiting is the honest referendum on wanting. If two weeks feels like an outrage, it was never an impulse.

The vest in question

It's the Shanghai Riviera Vest from Laganini Studio's signature Shanghai series — handmade in Spain, cut in deliberately limited numbers, and currently on pre-order (a sentence that, per my own test, has only made me want it more). The print is the studio's own; the reviews hover near five stars and keep using words like "original" and "breathable," which is the summer double very few pieces pull off. They cut it in other colorways too, and it's photographed with their matching Riviera pants for anyone braver than me. I'll report back the moment the cart becomes a closet.
